Vote: Which Texas high school football freshman had best 2023 season?

The 2023 Texas high school football season is in the rear view, and we're taking a look at the most impactful players across the Lone Star State last fall.

After unveiling our All-East Texas, All-West Texas, All-South Texas, All-North Texas, All-Southeast Texas and All-Central Texas teams and awards, we released our All-Texas high school football team, honoring the best of the best.

After examining some of the best individual seasons at the quarterback, running back, wide receivers, defensive backs, linebacker, defensive line and offensive line position groups and multi-purpose athletes, we gathered the freshmen who had the best inaugural seasons in 2023-24.

We narrowed down six players that rose above the rest in our postseason awards. Which class of 2027 standout rose above the rest?

TOP 6 FRESHMEN FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN TEXAS 

Ethan Feaster, DeSoto, wide receiver, fr.

He has the speed and size (6-foot-2) that colleges covet and already had 33 offers. He had 32 catches for 634 yards and 9 touchdowns this year.

Hank Hendrix, Boerne, quarterback, fr.

The freshman Greyhound came in relief for the injured junior Jaxon Baize and helped lead Boerne to a second consecutive district championship. Hendrix accounted for 1,586 yards and tossed 18 touchdowns to just one interception.

Darius Jones, Stratford, defensive back, fr.

Jones was one of the difference-makers for the Elk defense as part of a spectacular 14-1 season. In addition to making 53 tackles (13 solo, 40 assists), he had six interceptions. Stratford made it all the way to the Class 2A Division I state semifinals before falling to Tolar, 35-7.

 Colt Lozano, Laredo United, wide receiver, fr.

Laredo United had a clear-cut trio of receivers returning from last year set to eat up a chunk of the targets this season. That didn’t stop Lozano from carving out a role in the Longhorns’ offense, emerging as another weapon for UTRGV commit Atzel Chavez. The 5-foot-9 wideout set the foundation for what could be a decorated career, finishing fourth on the team in receiving yards (441) and fifth in touchdowns (7). His biggest performance of the year came during a District 30-6A contest against Eagle Pass, hauling in eight catches for 125 yards and three scores during a 42-28 win.

Brett Wells, Troup, RB/LB, fr.

Wells got his high school career off to an electrifying start by rushing for 1,155 yards and 10 touchdowns on 149 carries on offense. On defense, he made 93 tackles (54 solo, 39 assists), including eight for loss, to help the Tigers finish 9-2. Wells is the District 9-3A Division II Defensive Newcomer of the Year and a First-Team running back. Have a year, newbie.

Landen Williams-Calls, Richmond Randle, running back, fr.

He already holds 13 offers to play at Division I schools, and the Lions relied heavily on the ninth grader. He has 206 carries — out of the team’s 368 as a team — and he delivered 1,944 yards with 23 touchdowns. The rest of the team combined for 19 TDs, for scale.
