Quicker Class 3A squad pulls away late for WIBCA all-star victory over 4A seniors

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Never mind it is officially the offseason, recently-crowned Class 3A championship Auburn boys basketball coach Ryan Hansen is still drawing up inspired performances.

Even in showcase games.

Explosive Mount Tahoma guard Asjon Anderson scored a game-high 23 points, and Hazen's Jaxon Nap broke a tie for good in the final minute as the 3A team prevailed, 105-102, over the 4A squad at the WIBCA senior-only all-star game at Curtis High School.

After Kaden Hansen's breakaway layin gave the 3A squad a 105-102 lead with three seconds to go, Union point guard Bryson Metz's halfcourt heave hit too hard off the backboard glass to end the game.

"We told the guys, it is winning time in the last four minutes," Ryan Hansen said. "It's time to go make plays and win the game, and I thought we obviously made enough to do that."

This is a showcase game tailor-made for Anderson's turbo-like scoring. He averaged more than 32 points per game for the Thunderbirds this season.

In a 31/2-minute span midway through the second half, Anderson racked up 13 points, including three 3-pointers - the finale one giving the 3A team a 78-71 lead with 11:14 to go.

"For sure, he can showcase what he can do," Hansen said.

The 4A squad rallied to tie it three times in the final eight minutes - the last one at 101-101 on Metz's 14-foot jump shot with 1:10 remaining.

On 3A's next possession, Nap went right at Kamiakin's Tyler Bilodeau, WIBCA's all-classification state player of the year headed to Oregon State University. And Nap created enough space to get a lane to the basket and draw the foul.

After Nap sank both free throws with 58.3 seconds remaining, Metz tried giving the 4A team the lead, but his 3-point attempt rimmed off.

Kelso's Michael Foust added 15 points, and Nap and Auburn's Tre Blassingame finished with 11 apiece for 3A.

Six 4A players scored in double figures, led by Camas standout Carson Frawley's 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Glacier Peak's Bobby Siebers had 14.

Life Christian Academy's Bradley Swillie doesn't care if it's an all-star game or a pickup game on the blacktop - he plays to win.

And that was good news in the Class 1A WIBCA all-stars' comeback victory Saturday over the 2A squad.

Swille tallied a game-high 25 points, but it was his defensive pressure that woke his team up from a double-digit deficit as the 1A all-stars finish with a flurry.

He also had seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the victory.

"Tempo-wise, there wasn't a lot of defense being played - but (Swillie) was playing it the whole game," said Lynden Christian coach Tim Zylstra, who coached the 1A team. "He put them in spots where he got some turnovers.

"He is a good player."

North Kitsap standout Jonas La Tour gave the 2A all-stars their last lead, 94-92, on two free throws with 3:23 remaining.

But the 1A squad responded with a 10-0 run over an 88-second span, capped by back-to-back 3-pointers by Seattle Academy's Logan Britt and Swillie.

Jonny Olmstead, of North Kitsap, snapped the spurt with a 3-pointer, but Zillah's Clay Delp answered with his own corner 3-pointer to give the 1A squad a 105-97 lead at the 1:12 mark.

"I knew we had some guys down the stretch to go to," Zylstra said.

King's forward Jordan Hansen added 22 points for the 1A squad. La Tour lead the 2A team with 20 points.

Jared Hodl was more than happy to have Colfax shooting guard Josh Lustig on his side, even if it was just for an all-star game.

Instead of having to devise a Liberty of Spangle defense gear to stop him, all Hodl had to do Saturday was unleash him - and the Lewis-Clark State signee filled it up with a game-high 31 points at Curtis High School.

Lustig made 12 of 21 field goal attempts, including five 3-pointers.

"It's a great thing to be able to sit there and watch Lustig go to work - and just not miss, honestly," Hodl said.

Of course, Hodl's point guard for the recently-crowned 2B champions - Tayshawn Colvin - wasn't too shabby, either. Colvin finished with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting while collecting eight rebounds.

"He is 'Mister Consistency,'" Hodl said. "You know what you are going to get out of him."

Pierre Boorman, out of Moses Lake Christian, led the 1B all-stars with 28 points, including four 3-pointers.
