Camia Howard, Kamiakin wake up in second half to put away Bothell in WIAA Class 4A girls basketball loser-out game
TACOMA - Camia Howard came to life when Mid-Columbia Conference champions Kamiakin needed her most.
With her team trailing Bothell at the half, Howard scored just 14 seconds into the third quarter to give the Braves a one-point lead.
Trailing again after MyKylee Hawkins made a 3-pointer for the Cougars a minute later, Howard scored quickly again, putting Kamiakin in front for good in its 62-52 victory Wednesday night in the opening round of the Class 4A girls basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome.
The win catapults the Braves into a state quarterfinal against Emerald Ridge, the No. 8 seed that upset No. 1 Woodinville in the regionals a week ago. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The 5-foot-10 junior eventually scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter as the seventh-seeded Braves turned that 25-24 halftime deficit into a 44-35 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Hawkins and Ella Kaleta paced the Cougars with 14 points apiece.
