SBLive's Power 25 Washington high school football rankings: Not much change at top after opening weekend

Lynden drops most - 11 spots to No. 18 - after its 20-14 home loss to Ferndale

After a full slate of games for opening weekend, here is SBLive WA's all-classification Top-25 rankings heading into Week 2:

---

1. EASTSIDE CATHOLIC CRUSADERS 0-1 (3A)

Up next: Friday vs. Ballard (3A)

Last result: 20-0 loss to Orange Lutheran (CA)

Last ranking: No. 1

Ranking rationale: Loss to one of California's top team not so damaging as defense held Lancers to 319 yards and registered two interceptions.

---

2. YELM TORNADOS 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday vs. Union (4A)

Last result: 8-7 win over Camas (4A)

Last ranking: No. 2

Ranking rationale: A few dinged-up regulars, including LB Brayden Platt, were on pitch counts - but is it too early to panic over offense (by the way, Camas appears really good again)?

---

3. O'DEA FIGHTING IRISH 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday at Bishop Blanchet (3A)

Last result: 40-0 win over Union (4A)

Last ranking: No. 3

Ranking rationale: Good way for state contenders to ease into season. And RB Jason Brown Jr. looked spry in his limited carries (155 rushing yards, two TDs).

---

4. GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN EAGLES 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday at Puyallup (4A)

Last result: 49-10 win over Rogers of Puyallup (4A)

Last ranking: No. 4

Ranking rationale: Offense did not disappoint in season debut, especially transfer WR (and Oregon State commit) Malachi Durant, who returned kickoff in very first touch of game.

---

5. LAKE STEVENS VIKINGS 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday at Bellevue (3A)

Last result: 48-21 win over Garfield (3A)

Last ranking: No. 6

Ranking rationale: Welcome back, state champions! And QB Kolton Matson (331 passing yards, six TDs) and company looked explosive from get-go in avenging last year's opening loss.

---

6. BELLEVUE WOLVERINES 0-1 (3A)

Up next: Friday vs. Lake Stevens (4A)

Last result: 48-27 loss to Central Catholic (OR)

Last ranking: No. 5

Ranking rationale: Wolverines knew they were heading down to Oregon with defense that will need a few weeks to find its footing. Bellevue will be just fine, folks.

---

7. EMERALD RIDGE JAGUARS 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday at Olympia (4A)

Last result: 36-23 win over Puyallup (4A)

Last ranking: No. 8

Ranking rationale: This is a city owned by the Vikings in football, so for Emerald Ridge to get past its district rival to begin 2023 cannot be overstated as a big accomplishment.

---

8. KENNEWICK LIONS 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday vs. Walla Walla (3A)

Last result: 59-14 win over Pasco (4A)

Last ranking: No. 9

Ranking rationale: For a team that scored 21 points or fewer in five games last season, this offensive showing is certainly encouraging for coach Randy Affholter's club.

---

9. SKYVIEW STORM 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday vs. Columbia River (2A)

Last result: 28-0 win over Jesuit (OR)

Last ranking: No. 10

Ranking rationale: What's not to like against a pretty good team from Oregon? Defense posts shutout and scores - and offense moves it even without WR Gavin Packer.

---

10. KAMIAKIN BRAVES 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Thursday vs. Moses Lake (4A)

Last result: 20-13 win (OT) over Chiawana (4A)

Last ranking: No. 11

Ranking rationale: Took a while for offense to settle in, but QB Trent Woodhouse leads game-clinching series in overtime - even if it was a tad lucky (deflected pass for touchdown).

---

11. KENNEDY CATHOLIC LANCERS 0-1 (4A)

Up next: Saturday vs. Highline (2A)

Last result: 36-33 loss to Regis Jesuit (CO)

Last ranking: No. 12

Ranking rationale: Going on the road and playing tough Raiders team close was not a bad loss. Only guy to give Lancers real issues was RB Albert Medina (207 rushing yards, four TDs).

---

12. SUMNER SPARTANS 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday vs. Curtis (4A)

Last result: 40-0 win over Bellarmine Prep (4A)

Last ranking: No. 13

Ranking rationale: Big-play Sumner? Spartans might have caught critics off guard by striking big through the air with QB Tristan Rebar, who was making his first career start.

---

13. STANWOOD SPARTANS 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday at Marysville-Pilchuck (3A)

Last result: 37-16 win over Lakewood (2A)

Last ranking: No. 14

Ranking rationale: One thing is for certain - the Bumgarner boys in this program are fun to watch. With Ryder gone, Canyon didn't miss a beat (rushing TD, four pass breakups)

---

14. MOUNT SI WILDCATS 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Friday vs. Spanaway Lake (3A)

Last result: Forfeit vs. Lynnwood (3A)

Last ranking: No. 16

Ranking rationale: Not much you can do when your schedule opponent cancels day before the game. Oh well, 4A KingCo favorites will debut this week at home.

---

15. BOTHELL COUGARS 1-0 (4A)

Up next: Saturday vs. Central Kitsap (3A)

Last result: 34-0 win over Curtis (NY)

Last ranking: No. 20

Ranking rationale: Think transfer QB Jaylen Viars likes his new home? Dual-threat weapon had five total touchdowns as Cougars storm "The Big Apple."

---

16. NORTH KITSAP VIKINGS 1-0 (2A)

Up next: Friday vs. Tumwater (2A)

Last result: 24-21 win over Mount Tahoma (3A)

Last ranking: No. 18

Ranking rationale: Defense still good - and multi-faceted QB Cole Edwards might be pint-sized, but he is one slippery runner in the open field. Viks are new No. 1 in 2A.

---

17. CHIAWANA RIVERHAWKS 0-1 (4A)

Up next: Friday at Hanford (4A)

Last result: 20-13 loss to Kamiakin (4A)

Last ranking: No. 17

Ranking rationale: Riverhawks easily could have won this thriller, and here is a name to watch out for in coming weeks - DB Justin Webber, who had two of team's five INTs.

---

18. LYNDEN LIONS 0-1 (2A)

Up next: Friday at Archbishop Murphy (2A)

Last result: 20-14 loss to Ferndale (3A)

Last ranking: No. 7

Ranking rationale: Who said a new pass-more approach with a bunch of first-year starters wouldn't take time to fire up? Two-time defending champions came out flat in rivalry game.

---

19. ANACORTES SEAHAWKS 1-0 (2A)

Up next: Friday vs. Port Angeles (2A)

Last result: 21-7 win over Oak Harbor (3A)

Up next: Friday at Sumner (4A)

Last result: 45-13 win over Olympia (4A)

Last ranking: No. 21

Ranking rationale: Big year coming for dangerous QB Rocco Koch, who had 321 passing-rushing yards and six total touchdowns as Viks rally from early hole.

---

21. LAKES LANCERS 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday at River Ridge (3A)

Last result: 37-24 win over Kentwood (4A)

Last ranking: No. 22

Ranking rationale: QB Legend Galeai sparkles in Year 2 debut with 245 passing yards and four total touchdowns. Good young talent will determine how far this team goes in 2023.

---

22. ENUMCLAW HORNETS 1-0 (2A)

Up next: Thursday vs. Franklin Pierce (2A)

Last result: 20-13 win over Peninsula (3A)

Last ranking: No. 23

Ranking rationale: Hornets survived opening nail-biter as RB Shamus Twohey scored the game-winner with 31/2 minutes to go. Defense was opportunistic (four turnovers).

---

23. CAMAS PAPERMAKERS 0-1 (4A)

Up next: Friday at Glacier Peak (4A)

Last result: 8-7 loss to Yelm (3A)

Last ranking: No. 24

Ranking rationale: Maybe the surprise performance of the week around the state. Takeaways are last year's defensive issues have been fixed - and new QB Jake Davidson is potential playmaker.

---

24. GARFIELD BULLDOGS 0-1 (3A)

Up next: Friday vs. Lincoln of Seattle (3A)

Last result: 48-21 loss to Lake Stevens (4A)

Last ranking: No. 15

Ranking rationale: Bulldogs entered season-starting tempest as reigning Class 4A champions wanted to square away last year's loss in home stadium. Don't worry about Garfield.

---

25. MONROE BEARCATS 1-0 (3A)

Up next: Friday at Shorecrest (3A)

Last result: 34-25 win over Roosevelt (3A)

Last ranking: No. 25

Ranking rationale: There's no question this experienced group has firepower, led by QB Blake Springer, who had good moments (237 passing yards, three TDs) and bad ones (two INTs).
