Mater Dei boys basketball beats St. John Bosco to take control of Trinity League: 3 observations
SANTA ANA -- Mater Dei took down St. John Bosco 60-54 Tuesday night. Devin Askew and Wilhelm Breidenbach each scored 22 points for the Monarchs in the victory. Mater Dei is now a win away from an outright Trinity League title. Below are three observations from Tuesday's game.
ASKEW LEADS THE MONARCHS IN FINAL QUARTER
Kentucky signee Devin Askew scored 12 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter on Tuesday.
"That was our last opportunity to step on the gas so we came out strong," Askew said. "It felt good."
At one point in the final frame Askew went on a 7-0 run by himself to put the Monarchs ahead 53-46.
When Mater Dei fell to St. John Bosco 70-62 earlier this season Askew faced the wrath of the Braves' football team who showed up to rally and support their friends on the hardwood. When asked how it felt to avenge that defeat, Askew responded: "feels great," with a smirk.
TRINITY LEAGUE IS JUST ABOUT DECIDED
There is still a chance Mater Dei and St. John Bosco split the Trinity League title this year, like they did a year ago, but it's a long shot. Mater Dei will go on the road to play JSerra on Thursday. The Lions are 21-6, but will be without their two top players in the league finale. Big man Francesco Borra (ACL injury) and Utah signee Ian Martinez will both not play.
St. John Bosco plays Santa Margarita. If they win that game, they'll finish league play at 8-2. If Mater Dei wins on Thursday, they'll be 9-1.
OPEN DIVISION IMPLICATIONS
Mater Dei beating St. John Bosco will get the Monarchs into the Open Division playoffs in the Southern Section. St. John Bosco should still get in too, but they could get jumped by Ribet Academy if the Fighting Frogs beat Rancho Christian in their final regular season game on Saturday. Southern Section playoff seedings come out on Sunday.
