SBLive’s LA City Section Baseball Top 10: Roosevelt breaks back into top four

It may be spring break for LAUSD schools, but there will be plenty of baseball played this week.

SBLive’s LA City Section high school baseball rankings are compiled by SBLive reporter Connor Morrissette and are released weekly throughout the season.

SBLIVE’S LA CITY SECTION TOP 10 BASEBALL RANKINGS

April 11, 2022

1. Granada Hills (15-3-1)

Last week: 1

When ace Drew Gustafson pitched for the Highlanders against No. 2 Birmingham last week, Granada Hills won 12-5. 

2. Birmingham (13-7)

Last week: 2

The Patriots took game one of their two game series with No. 1 Granada Hills last week 5-4. Junior shortstop Vince Cervantes finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two singles in the win. He scored two runs and had an RBI. On the mound, Kaden Taque and Ricardo Martinez combined to throw a two-hitter for the Patriots.

3. El Camino Real (13-6)

Last week: 4

ECR swept No. 5 Chatsworth with 6-5 and 8-0 wins last week. 

4. Roosevelt (15-5)

Last week: 5

Roosevelt has lost to No. 7 Palisades and No. 10 Cleveland this season, but beaten No. 5 Chatsworth and No. 6 San Pedro. The Roughriders are 6-0 in the Eastern League and have won four games in a row since senior pitcher Lino Zepeda threw 7 and 2/3 innings and struck out 13 in a 1-0 defeat against No. 1 Granada Hills on March 23. 

5. Chatsworth (9-9)

Last week: 3

Chatsworth losing two straight to No. 3 El Camino Real drops the Chancellors to No. 5 this week. 

6. San Pedro (10-7)

Last week: 6

The Pirates have strong pitching depth and they showed it off in their 1-0 win over No. 7 Palisades two weeks ago. Senior Jesse Ferreira, the team's third starter, threw a complete game shutout striking out six in the victory. Last week, the Pirates beat Gardena twice and lost to No. 1 Granada Hills 12-3.

7. Palisades (12-3-1)

Last week: 7

Palisades swept Venice in two games and beat San Fernando 10-2 last week. 

8. Sylmar (11-6-1)

Last week: 8

Sylmar swept Reseda in two games last week. The Spartans play a key non-league City Section game against Taft on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. 

9. Poly (12-7)

Last week: 9

Poly beat No. 10 Cleveland 3-2 two weeks ago. Jessie Pineda threw a complete game and struck out seven in the win. Diego Ortega had the game-winning RBI. Last week, the Parrots beat North Hollywood and lost to Southern Section power North Hollywood. 

10. Cleveland (10-8)

Last week: 10

Cleveland swept Taft to get back to .500 (2-2) in the West Valley League last week.
