Live score updates: Harvard-Westlake, Trent Perry knocks off Salesian for California boys basketball state championship

The Wolverines go back-to-back in the Open (top) division in the last of 12 CIF games pitting the top teams overall from the South and North at Golden 1 Center.

SACRAMENTO — The boys basketball that decided the 2023-24 Open Division championship turned into a street fight. Nothing dirty. Just intense. Fearless. Scrappy play, possession-by-possession.

In the end, perhaps the toughest of them all, Trent Perry was the difference. Who else?

The reigning SBLive California Player of the Year, a 6-foot-4 senior point guard headed to USC, made all the big buckets down the stretch, lifting Harvard-Westlake to its second straight Open Division title with a 50-45 win over a scrappy Salesian squad Saturday night at Golden 1 Center.

Perry made his team's final eight points and the game's last six points to finish with 17 overall, lifting the Wolverines (33-3)  who took an 11-point in the first quarter than held on.

Robert Hinton (19 points) did most of the damage early, but Perry was the closer to Harvard-Westlake's second straight Open championship and fifth title overall.

Elias Obenyah had 14 points and De'Undrae Perteete added 10 for the Pride (31-2), who had their 20-game win streak snapped.

OPEN DIVISION BOYS: HARVARD-WESTLAKE 50, SALESIAN 45

4TH QUARTER

Harvard-Westlake 50, Salesian 45 (final): Back-to-back title sfor the Wolverines

H-W 50, Salesian 45 (8.0): Perry again. Two free throws. Again, who else? The reigning SBLive State Player of the Year.

H-W 48, Salesian 45 (24.0): Perry. Again. Who else? Tough fadeaway jumper from near the foul line. Incredible. after a turnover. He's up to 15 points.

H-W 46, Salesian 45 (1:15): Perry with inside bucket. Who else? Perry with steal with 56.3 seconds left. Timeout H-W. Have the ball.

Salesian 45, H-W 44 (1:28): Obenyah layup gives Salesian lead.

H-W 44, Salesian 43(2:11): Amani Johnson one free throw.

Harvard-Westlake 44, Salesian 42 (4:01) Trent Perry posts up and banks in a layup. This after Salesian missed two absolute chippies.

Salesian 42, Harvard-Westlake 42 (4:37): Not much scoring, but thrilling basketball. Every possession is a street fight.

3RD QUARTER

Harvard-Westlake 38, Salesian 36 (end of 3): A couple buckets after nifty footwork from Khamenia highlighted a 9-2 run giving the Wolverines back the lead, 38-34. A layup by Perteete closed the gap to two heading into the fourth quarter.

Salesian 32, Harvard-Westlake 31 (4:45): Remarkable. The Pride in middle of 5-0 run to take the lead, capped with a driving layup by Obenyah. Bet Harvard-Westlake hasn't gone scoreless for many four-minute spurts this season. Salesian's defense is stout.

2ND QUARTER

Harvard-Westlake 31, Salesian 27: Befitting of their mascot, the Pride simply wasn't going away. They chipped back in as usual with balance galor as three different players have six points — De'Undrae Perteete, Elias Obernyah and Zion Yeargin and Aaron Hunkin-Claytor with five. Meanwhile, Robert Hinton has 15 and Trent Perry six.  The teams have combined to connect on 7 of 11 3-pointers.

Harvard-Westlake 30, Salesian 23: Harvard-bound Robert Hinton continues to light it up with two more jumpers, giving him 15 for the game, half of the Wolverines' total.

Harvard-Westlake 26, Salesian 21 (3:45): Pride creeping in utilizing new bodies including Zion Yeargin, who hits a 3-pointer and makes a 3-point play.

1ST QUARTER

Harvard-Westlake 21, Salesian 11 (end of 1): Robert Hinton goes for nine, Trent Perry six as the Wolverines using length to get inside. And long enough to contest Salesian at the rim. Wolverines make 8 of 12 from the field, while Salesian 4-for-12. Simple stat has been the easy to pick out the winners and losers of every game.
