San Diego Section news and notes: Helix boys basketball coach John Singer retires

Coaching news:

• Helix boys’ basketball coach John Singer announced his retirement after 39 years as the Highlanders head coach. Singer finished his career with 741 wins.

• Point Loma’s Mike Hastings announced that he is stepping down as head coach. Hastings has led the Pointers since 1998.

• Danny Mitchell was named athletic director and head coach at Christian High School. Mitchell was previously the offensive coordinator at The Bishop’s School and had taken the same position at Torrey Pines High School during the off-season before the retirements of Christian Head Coach Matt Oliver and Athletic Director David Beezer led Mitchell back to his alma mater.

• Aaron Douglas was named the head boys' basketball coach at Steele Canyon High School. Douglas was previously an assistant coach at Southwestern College and La Jolla Country Day. He played basketball at Cuyamaca College and San Diego State.
