SBLive Texas Top 50: Jersey Village makes season debut, North Shore climbs into top five

The final week of the 2021 Texas high school football regular season has arrived, as teams from around the state fight for remaining postseason berths and prepare for the playoffs.

This week one Houston-area team made its season debuts in SBLive’s statewide rankings and two familiar faces climbed back into the top 10 too after an upset win in the DFW and a ranked showdown in Houston defined the 10th weekend of the Texas high school football season.

Below are SBLive’s Texas Top 50 rankings for the week of Nov. 3. The rankings are compiled by reporter Andrew McCulloch and will be released every week throughout the fall.

Jersey Village makes its season debut in SBLive’s Texas Top 50 following a dramatic 28-21 road win over Stratford in a battle of undefeated Houston teams Saturday afternoon to claim the District 17-6A championship. The Falcons have been one of the state’s top teams defensively with 27 takeaways through their first nine games this fall. A pair of elite North Texas teams in Class 5A — Ennis and Texarkana Texas High — each won Week 10 games to stay undefeated this year. Ennis climbed two spots to 44th, its highest ranking of the season, this week after the Lions dominated Royse City 48-20 on the road in a showdown for the District 8-5A DII title between unbeaten teams. Texas High stayed put after picking up a solid 37-20 win at home against Nacogdoches to secure at least a share of the District 9-5A DII championship. One undefeated team from the Texas Hill Country leapfrogged another in our statewide rankings this week. Dripping Springs surged five spots forward to 45th following a blowout victory against previously unbeaten Buda Johnson 52-7, as the Tigers moved one spot ahead of Austin LBJ in the Top 50. Dripping Springs, which broke into the statewide rankings for the first time last week, clinched the District 12-5A DI title with its most recent win and has reached 52 points or more offensively in four of its last five games. Austin LBJ, meanwhile, dropped one spot below the Tigers after beating Burnet 45-3 on the road last week. The Jaguars, the highest-ranked 4A DI team in SBLive’s Texas Top 50, beat their district opponents by an average of 30.5 points per game in October. Two additional teams without a loss in this part of the rankings — Edinburg Vela and Montgomery — also won important district games in Week 10. Vela downed Mission 35-7 on Thursday to stay at No. 43, repeat as District 31-6A champions and complete a perfect regular-season finish for the second straight season. Montgomery moved down one spot after the Bears survived an overtime scare on the road against Huntsville (35-28 OT), but locked up at least a share of the District 10-5A DII title. Houston C.E. King, meanwhile, moved up one spot after the Panthers rebounded with a 35-12 road win over Beaumont West Brook to secure a third-place finish in District 21-6A. Amarillo Tascosa, the top-ranked sub-6A team from West Texas, dropped three spots after the Rebels took their bye in Week 10, while Katy Paetow slid 13 spots in this week’s edition of the statewide rankings following the Panthers’ first loss of the season at Manvel (33-28). Corpus Christi Veterans dropped out of the Top 50 after losing its first game of the year 31-7 to District 15-5A DI rival Corpus Christi Flour Bluff.

Manvel became the biggest climber in this part of SBLive’s Texas Top 50 this week after the Mavericks defeated Katy Paetow 33-28. The Mavs’ upset win created a three-way tie with Paetow and Fort Bend Hightower for first place in District 10-5A DI entering the final weekend of the regular season. Frisco Lone Star and San Antonio Johnson each moved up four spots this week following crucial wins in their respective district title races. Lone Star won its seventh game in a row with a 49-6 road blowout against The Colony last week to set up a de facto District 5-5A DI championship game against Denton Ryan in Week 11. Johnson escaped with a 46-43 overtime win over San Antonio Reagan in its toughest test of the season so far and the team’s second straight win by a touchdown or less. The Jaguars also captured the District 28-6A title with their victory over Reagan. Carthage and Dickinson, meanwhile, each ascended three spots in this edition of SBLive’s Texas Top 50. Carthage, the highest-ranked sub-5A team for the entirety of this season, moved up to its highest ranking of the year at 32nd after the Bulldogs bullied Madisonville 54-3 on the road in Week 10 to remain undefeated. Dickinson downed League City Clear Springs 35-24 in its closest district game so far to nab at least a share of the District 24-6A title. A pair of Houston-area 6A teams — Alvin Shadow Creek and Fort Bend Ridge Point — moved up two and one spots, respectively, this week after both teams won to improve their odds of securing outright district championships. Shadow Creek earned a 34-27 road win over Pearland last week to give the Sharks their seventh straight win and stay unbeaten against District 23-6A competition. Ridge Point rolled to a 49-21 road victory against Fort Bend Bush on Saturday night to stay perfect in district play and set up a de facto District 20-6A championship game between the Panthers and Fort Bend Travis in Week 11. Smithson Valley stayed in place in this week’s rankings after walking away with a 21-3 rebound win over San Antonio East Central to stay in the District 27-6A title hunt and clinch the Rangers’ 26th playoff berth in the last 28 years. Lewisville fell eight spots after the Farmers lost their first game of the season to Flower Mound Marcus 40-27 on the road in the Battle of the Axe rivalry while another 6A squad, League City Clear Falls, dropped two spots after the Knights narrowly escaped with a 13-7 road win against crosstown rival League City Clear Creek.

Two surging 6A squads — Garland and Midland Legacy — moved inside the top 30 this week after clinching shares of their respective district titles in 9-6A and 2-6A. Garland jumped up five spots after the Owls rolled to a 41-14 win over Rowlett to remain unbeaten this season. Midland Legacy, the top West Texas team in this week’s rankings, rose two spots following a 69-28 road win over San Angelo Central in which the team set a new season high for points scored. The Rebels have been on a tear offensively averaging 64.8 points per contest in their four most recent victories.Two more unbeaten teams — Lucas Lovejoy and Austin Vandegrift — also won in Week 10 to move up one spot each in this week’s statewide rankings. Lovejoy clinched at least a share of the District 7-5A DII title with its 55-7 road victory against Frisco Lebanon Trail, while Vandegrift smashed Hutto 49-9 on the road to win at least a share of the District 25-6A championship last week. Cibolo Steele, meanwhile, eked out a 35-30 road win against Converse Judson, but dropped one spot in this week’s Top 50. Lovejoy, Steele and Vandegrift will all play in de facto district championship games during Week 11. Spring moved up three spots in the latest version of SBLive’s Texas Top 50 following a 34-3 road victory against Aldine Nimitz to extend the Lions’ winning streak to four games. Allen, however, tumbled 14 spots and out of the top 10 in this week’s statewide rankings after losing its second game of the season at Prosper (28-23), which will prevent the Eagles from finishing with an outright District 6-6A title. Katy Tompkins slid two spots in this week’s Top 50 after the Falcons won their second straight shutout with a 44-0 win over Katy Seven Lakes. Tompkins has outscored its opponents 143-7 during its active three-game winning streak following the Falcons’ only loss of the season to Katy. A pair of two-loss DFW powerhouse programs — Arlington Martin and DeSoto — also won pivotal Week 10 games as both teams maintained prime positioning in the 6A playoff race. Martin stayed put in this week’s rankings after the Warriors walloped Grand Prairie 66-20 to guarantee themselves at least a share of the District 8-6A title. DeSoto dropped three spots this week following a 54-35 victory against Mansfield Lake Ridge to set up a head-to-head matchup for second place in District 11-6A against Waxahachie in Week 11.

Highland Park became the only team in this week’s edition of SBLive’s Texas Top 50 by rising three spots to 19th following the team’s eighth straight victory. The Scots earned a 60-28 road win over West Mesquite in Week 10 to lock up at least a share of the District 7-5A DI title. Euless Trinity was the other top-tier DFW program making big moves in this part of the statewide rankings. The Trojans shot up three spots and inside the top 15 after a dominant 42-0 home victory over Haltom. Trinity, which has been bolstered by one of the state’s strongest offensive lines and rushing attacks, has beaten its opponents in District 3-6A play by 40.4 points per game. Aledo, as well as a pair of 6A teams in the top 20 from the Austin and Houston areas, climbed two spots in the latest SBLive Texas Top 50. Aledo moved up to 13th, its highest ranking of the season to date, after burying Arlington Seguin in a 55-21 road win. With the win, the Bearcats moved within one game of completing their 14th consecutive unbeaten run through district play to a district championship. Lake Travis pounded Austin Akins 56-7 in its home finale for the team’s sixth straight win. The Cavaliers stayed undefeated in District 26-6A with the victory and stayed tied for first place in the district with rival Austin Westlake after Lake Travis outscored its first six 26-6A opponents by 43.7 points per contest. Cypress Park was also on the rise again this week after a 50-43 rebound win against Cypress Ranch to secure at least a share of the District 16-6A championship following the Tigers’ first loss of the year to Cypress Woods in Week 9. One of Cy Park’s district rivals hoping to grab at least a share of the 16-6A district title, Cypress Bridgeland, stayed put at 20th in this week’s SBLive Texas Top 50. The Bears creamed Cypress Lakes 42-0 in their second straight victory since the full-fledged return of senior quarterback Conner Weigman, who helped the team go from averaging 15.5 points in two early October games mostly without him to scoring 48.5 points per contest in Bridgeland’s two wins since his return. Two more unbeaten teams in Class 5A, College Station and Fort Bend Marshall, each remained in place in this week’s updated statewide rankings too. College Station walloped Waller 70-0 for the Cougars’ third straight shutout victory by 70 points or more in District 8-5A DI play, while Fort Bend Marshall stifled Houston Sterling in a 56-0 win in Week 10 to mark the Buffaloes’ fifth defensive shutout in its last six District 11-5A DII games this fall. Rockwall got bumped up a spot this week after the Yellow Jackets took down Mesquite Horn 52-26 on the road, as Rockwall senior quarterback Braedyn Locke inched closer to several all-time Texas high school football passing records in Class 6A. Humble Atascocita, meanwhile, tumbled out of the top 10 after the Eagles fell to district rival Galena Park North Shore 31-21 on Friday in District 21-6A’s de facto district championship game. The Eagles dropped eight spots following their second loss of the season.

Two of the DFW’s top teams, Denton Ryan and Rockwall Heath, made their return to the top 10 this week after Week 10 losses sent Allen and Humble Atascocita tumbling down our statewide rankings. Ryan moved up two spots to No. 9 after drumming Frisco Independence 41-7 in its home finale last week. The Raiders, the highest-ranked 5A team in our rankings, are unbeaten against 5A teams this year and district opponents with a de facto District 5-5A DI championship game against Frisco Lone Star on deck. Rockwall Heath also moved up two spots this week after topping Tyler Legacy 49-27 to capture at least a share of the District 10-6A title. The Hawks have scored 42 points or more in every game during their active seven-game winning streak during which they’ve scored 58.4 points per contest. Galena Park North Shore was the other top 10 team turning heads after their Week 10 performance that pushed the team forward one spot into the top five this week. The Mustangs picked up one of the best wins throughout the state last week with a 31-21 home victory over Atascocita to wrap up their regular season and clinch the District 21-6A championship. North Shore leapfrogged Duncanville in the latest edition of SBLive’s Texas Top 50, but the Panthers have looked as impressive as anyone around the state lately. Duncanville beat Mansfield 63-17 on the road last week to seize at least a share of the District 11-6A title after the Panthers collectively outscored their first six district foes 350-48. Another pair of 6A heavyweights, Denton Guyer and San Antonio Brennan, also saw their stocks rise in this week’s Top 50. Both Guyer and Brennan shot up two spots each to seventh and eighth overall, respectively, after important district wins. Denton Guyer concluded its regular-season slate with a 45-21 home win over Little Elm last week that kept the Wildcats in the running for a share of the District 6-6A title. Brennan, the highest-ranked San Antonio team, continued its climb up SBLive’s Texas Top 50 by reaching No. 8, its highest ranking of the season, following a dominant 55-3 road victory over San Antonio Holmes to earn at least a share of the District 29-6A championship. For the fourth straight week, the top four teams in our statewide rankings held onto their spots. Austin Westlake, ranked third in SBLive’s Power 25 national high school football rankings, stayed red hot with another blowout win in district play. The Chaparrals bulldozed Austin High 77-3 to extend the longest active winning streak in Texas high school football to 33 games, the longest streak in program history. Westlake has been without senior quarterback Cade Klubnik due to a shoulder injury for three weeks, but the Chaps’ have taken that time to remind the state how dominant they are defensively after allowing 15 total points against their first six district opponents, none of which scored more than once. Second-ranked Katy throttled Katy Taylor 67-17 on Thursday to seize at least a share of the District 19-6A title, while third-ranked Southlake Carroll blew out Keller Timber Creek 42-7 on Friday as the Dragons moved one step closer to clinching their fourth straight outright district championship. Finally, Spring Westfield continued its streak of defensive dominance with a 66-0 victory over Aldine in its home finale. The fourth-ranked Mustangs have outscored their last four District 14-6A foes by a combined 225-6 points.
