Iowa’s best high school wrestlers: Meet the state’s top 132-pounders

We continue our look at weights in the state of Iowa with a potential four-time champion at 132 pounds last year. 

Waukee Northwest sensation Carter Freeman has claimed gold each of his first three years on the mats. He comes into the season with just four losses overall, headlining a star-studded group that includes three runner-up finishers and several more medalists.

Here is a look at some of the top 132-pound wrestlers in the state of Iowa:

Carter Freeman, Waukee Northwest, senior

Freeman looks to make history on the mats this winter, as a state title would be No. 4 and place him in some exclusive company. He has gone 106-4, with three of those losses coming last season.

Jayce Luna, Bettendorf, senior

Luna vaulted up the podium this past winter, going from back-to-back seventh place finishes to the finals. He was second and is now 106-18 for his career.

Anders Kittelson, Osage, senior

The run Osage is on is very impressive, and Kittleson is a big piece of it all. The senior was a runner-up last year after taking fourth two seasons ago. The Green Devil has gone 81-4 during that time.

Tanner Arjes, North Butler-Clarksville, senior

Arjes was fifth as a freshman and sophomore, but made it to the finals last year, going 46-2. He is now 126-11 coming into his senior season.

Cadyn Wild, Davenport Assumption, junior

Wild was just a match away from reaching the finals, placing third in 2A with a record of 42-4.

Jordan Dusenberry, Wilton, junior

Dusenberry used his freshman run at state to fuel his sophomore campaign that ended with a third place medal in 1A. He has gone 90-15 over his first two seasons.

Kael Kurtz, Iowa City High, senior

After going 15-2 and placing seventh as a ninth-grader, Kurtz is coming off back-to-back 35-plus win seasons while placing fourth. Overall, he carries a mark of 90-15.

Bo Koedam, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, junior

Each of Koedam’s first two seasons on the mat has ended at state with fourth place medals around his neck. He comes into the year with a record of 92-15.

Holden Mathis, MFL MarMac, senior

Mathis had 52 wins against just six defeats last year for MFL MarMac, earning fifth in 1A.

Duncan Harn, Pleasant Valley, junior

Harn’s sophomore season ended at state on the podium, as he was 34-13 overall and finished sixth.

Matt Beem, Glenwood, senior

Beem was sixth a season ago, going 27-4. That came on the heels of a run to the finals where he finished second and was 24-4. As a freshman, he placed seventh and won 21 matches, giving him a record of 72-13 entering the season.

Zane Behrends, Waverly-Shell Rock, senior

Three state appearances for Behrends with two sixth place medals to show. He won 32 matches as a freshman, 31 as a sophomore and went 23-16 a season ago.

Tyler Lee, Cedar Rapids Prairie, senior

Lee won 42 of his 53 matches last year, taking seventh in 3A for Prairie.

Jordan Schmidt, Solon, junior

Coming off a ninth-grade campaign that saw him go 37-20 and reach state, Schmidt posted a 35-11 record that included a win in his final match at state and a seventh place finish.

Mason Lucas, Carlisle, junior

Despite coming from one of the smaller 3A programs, Lucas was able to secure a medal, finishing eighth with a record of 41-11 overall.

Royce Butt, Central DeWitt, senior

After twice qualifying for state as a freshman and sophomore without reaching the podium, Butt broke through a season ago, going 34-8 and earning eighth.

Isaac Lomas, Waterloo East, junior

Lomas is looking to add his name to a long list of standouts to compete at East, reaching state as a sophomore with a 32-9 record.

Logan Trenary, Southeast Polk, junior

Following a run to fourth as a freshman, Trenary returned to state, going 24-12 last year. He enters the year with an overall mark of 59-19.

Kade Bauer, Sioux Center, senior

Twice before Bauer has reached state, finishing the year 35-11 and 31-18. Both trips, though, ended with a spot on the podium.

Caleb Cook, Pleasantville, senior

In what will be his final prep season, Cook seeks a medal for the first time after qualifying twice before. He went 47-7 last year and also posted a 37-9 mark.

Taevyn Zinnel, Algona, sophomore

Zinnel is part of the youth movement going on in Algona, as he went 37-11 with a state appearance as a freshman.

Steve Brandenburg, Lake Mills, sophomore

The son of head coach and former standout wrestler himself, Brandenburg shined as a freshman, going 34-6 and securing a bid to state.

Mark Gant, Hinton, junior

Gant earned 41 wins on the mat last winter and a spot in the state tournament draw.
