Johnston flexes muscle; Southeast Polk makes statement

Johnston beat the No. 1 team in 4A by 53, and Southeast Polk was the biggest mover in the final rankings of 2023 after its 30-point win over West Des Moines Valley, climbing 18 spots. 

1. Johnston (10-0) 

After an 85-32 drubbing of state Class 4A No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes, would you take Johnston or the field to win the 5A state championship?

2. West Des Moines Dowling (6-3)

Riding a four-game win streak into the new year, Maroons reclaim the No. 2 spot in the rankings.

3. Waukee (7-2)

Warriors climb two spots after trailing Johnston just 45-44 after three quarters in a 72-54 loss. Sophia Hope made six 3s in the setback.

4. Southeast Polk (6-4)

No outcome last week resonated more than the Rams' 57-27 win over West Des Moines Valley, in which Eva Solseth had 21 points and they held the Tigers to 24-percent shooting.

5. West Des Moines Valley (7-2)

Despite the surprising blowout to Southeast Polk, the battle-tested Tigers will be a contender in the second half of the season.

6. Davenport North (9-2)

Journey Houston had 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Wildcats narrowly avoided a big upset with a 58-57 win over DeWitt Central.

7. Clear Creek-Amana (8-0)

Sophomore Averie Lower is averaging about 18 points while shooting a sizzling 57.4% (27 of 47) from 3-point range.

8. Solon (9-1)

Callie Levin had 22 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and seven steals in a 72-29 win over Mid-Prairie.

9. Dike-New Hartford (8-1)

Bona fide challenges may be few and far between in the regular season for the Wolverines, who are beating opponents by an average of nearly 30 points per game.

10. North Linn (8-1)

Senior Macy Boge had 23 points, seven assists and no turnovers in a 79-52 win over Maquoketa Valley.

11. Ankeny Centennial (5-5)

Jaguars scored an emotional 50-49 win over Ankeny Tuesday, getting 18 points and six rebounds from junior Mya Crawford.

12. Ankeny (6-4)

Hawks were outrebounded 35-22 in their one-point loss to crosstown rival Ankeny Centennial.

13. Sioux City Heelan (8-0)

Freshman Melina Snoozy scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 66-48 win over Sioux City West.

14. Pleasant Valley (8-3)

In a 56-10 win over Davenport Central, the Spartans notched assists on 19 of their 24 baskets.

15. Cedar Falls (8-1)

Karis Finley had 18 points and seven steals, hitting 4 of 8 from 3-point range, in a 54-36 win over Western Dubuque.

16. Dallas Center-Grimes (9-1)

After its 53-point loss to Johnston, DC-G bounced back in resounding fashion with 55-20 win over highly regarded Norwalk.

17. Sioux Central (8-1)

Rebels and Newell-Fonda have separated themselves from the pack in the Twin Lakes Conference.

18. Estherville-Lincoln Central (10-2)

Midgets handed Central Lyon its first loss in emphatic fashion, 65-41, as Haylee Stokes had 36 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

19. Newell-Fonda (9-1)

In a 40-point win over Spencer, Mustangs assisted on 25 of their 28 field goals.

20. Waukee Northwest (5-4)

In an 88-22 win over Urbandale, the Wolves shot 40.7 percent from 3 (11 of 27) and outrebounded their opponent 44-17.

21. North Polk (7-2)

Comets were outscored 17-3 in the third quarter of their 58-43 loss to Ankeny Centennial, as Abby Tuttle led North Polk with 17 points and six rebounds.

22. Sioux City East (6-3)

Alexandra Flattery had 31 points, 11 rebounds and six steals in a 65-47 win over Cherokee.

23. Cedar Rapids Prairie (7-1)

Hawks carry a seven-game win streak into the new year after closing with wins over Iowa City High (56-38) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (49-24).

24. Waverly-Shell Rock (9-0)

Go-Hawks and Decorah (8-3) lead the Northeast Iowa Conference at 4-0. They meet on Jan. 5.

25. Mount Vernon (10-0)

Chloe Meester, a 6-foot-2 junior, leads the Mustangs with 16.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
