Iowa high school boys basketball Top 25 rankings (1/29/2024)

Cedar Rapids Kennedy maintains No. 1 spot while Sioux City East rises to No. 3

Unbeaten Cedar Rapids Kennedy solidified its position as the top-ranked team in our all-class Top 25 with an impressive win over the defending state champion, West Des Moines Valley. 

A couple of northwest Iowa teams – Sioux City East and perennial Class 2A power Hull Western Christian – made big moves.

Here are this week's SBLive Iowa Top 25 boys basketball rankings. 

1. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (14-0)

The unbeaten Cougars posted three double-digit victories, including an impressive 60-43 neutral court (Waukee) win over defending Class 4A champion West Des Moines Valley. Troy McKowen, Joe Bean and Micah Schlaak combine to average over 36 points per game.

2. Iowa City West (12-1)

The Trojans won all three games, including a 45-43 battle over Top 10 Cedar Falls, to remain No. 2. They have four players averaging double figures, including Jack McCaffery (16.7) and Jacob Koch (14.0).

3. Sioux City East (15-2)

The Black Raiders catapult nine spots into the top five after Top 10 wins over Council Bluffs Lincoln (71-56) and Waukee (68-53). East is riding a nine-game win streak.

4. Dubuque Senior (12-1)

The Rams improve a position after a 60-49 win over Dubuque Wahlert in their only game last week as Jacob Williams had 20 points and eight rebounds.

5. Waukee (12-5)

The Warriors beat No. 5 Ankeny Centennial, 70-56, and Urbandale, 84-62, but then fell at home to red-hot Sioux City East, 68-53.

6. West Des Moines Valley (11-4)

The Tigers posted wins over Johnston and rival Dowling but lost, 60-43, to Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Waukee.

7. North Scott (13-2)

The Lancers cruised to a couple of double-digit wins over Central DeWitt and Davenport Central.

8. Ankeny Centennial (11-4)

The Jaguars lost, 70-56, to Waukee and beat Cedar Rapids Prairie, 72-44.

9. Cedar Falls (11-3)

The Tigers beat Iowa City Liberty and Ames, but saw their five-game win streak end with a 45-43 loss at No. 2 Iowa City West.

10. Norwalk (11-2)

The Warriors have won six straight after beating Warren County rival Indianola and Ames by double figures. They move up a position and climb into the Top 10.

11. Dallas Center-Grimes (11-3)

The Mustangs rolled past always-tough Pella Christian, Newton and Oskaloosa, but lost at Waukee Northwest.

12. Clear Lake (14-0)

The 3A Lions remain undefeated with wins over Humboldt, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Fort Dodge St. Edmond. They climb two spots and are the highest ranked non-4A team in our all-class Top 25.

13. West Lyon (16-0)

The 2A Wildcats move up three spots with three more wins, including an impressive 25-point win over previously ranked MOC Floyd Valley.

14. Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln (12-3)

The Lynx suffered a 71-56 loss at Sioux City East in a battle of the top Class 4A teams in western Iowa. They did bounce back with blowout wins over Sioux City North and LeMars, but tumble five spots.

15. Hull Western Christian (14-1)

The defending Class 2A state runner-up Wolfpack have won eight straight. They are back in the rankings after an impressive 66-55 win over previously ranked Sioux City Bishop Heelan.

16. Ankeny (10-5)

The Hawks split a pair of games, beating West Des Moines Dowling Catholic and losing to Waukee Northwest. Ankeny, just 4-4 in its last eight games, falls three spots.

17. Waverly-Shell Rock (13-2)

The 3A Go-Hawks are on a 13-game winning streak after suffering a pair of early season losses to Cedar Rapids Xavier and unbeaten Clear Lake. With four players scoring in double figures – led by Noah Frazell (17.2) and Luke Frazell (16.7), they climb three slots.

18. Bellevue Marquette Catholic (18-0)

Spencer Roeder averages 16.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists for unbeaten Marquette Catholic, which is the only Class 1A team in our all-class top 25. It holds steady at No. 18.

19. Davenport West (11-4)

The Falcons saw their eight-game win streak end with a 71-45 loss at Bettendorf after posting a 54-52 triumph over Pleasant Valley.

20. Pleasant Valley (10-4)

After beating Bettendorf, the Spartans saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end with a tough 54-52 loss at Davenport West.

21. Adel ADM (12-1)

The 3A Tigers enter the rankings after winning 12 straight since losing their season opener to No. 11 Dallas Center-Grimes.

22. Carroll Kuemper Catholic (14-2)

The 2A Knights saw their 14-game win streak end with a 70-55 loss at 3A Council Bluffs Lewis Central (11-3). They fall five spots.

23. Decorah (14-1)

The Vikings make their way into the rankings with a six-game winning streak. Their only loss was to No. 15 Waverly-Shell Rock.

24. Des Moines Roosevelt (12-4)

The Rough Riders are back in the rankings after four straight victories.

25. Solon (15-0)

The unbeaten 3A Spartans, who debut in the rankings, are led by four seniors who average double digits – Jake Benzing (17.1), Vince Steinbrech (13.8), Gehrig Turner (12.1) and Rylen Stiegelmeyer (11.6).
