Iowa high school boys basketball state tournament: Western Christian handles Regina in 2A quarterfinal

DES MOINES, IOWA - Western Christian has been one of the more dominant teams in the state the past decade-plus. 

The Wolfpack showed why on Monday, rolling past Iowa City Regina and into the Class 2A semifinals, 56-34.

Western Christian has won at least 20 games each of the past four seasons and 10 of the last 12 overall. That includes a perfect 27-0 run in 2015-16.

Kaden VanRegemorter recorded a double-double to lead the Wolfpack, who will meet Treynor back here inside Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday. He scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Karsten Moret had 18 and four with Ty Mantel adding six and 11. Landon De Stigter scored nine points off the bench, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.

For the Regals, Michael Martin scored 13 but no other played had more than seven.

Western Christian shot 43 percent from the field and led by 12 at the break. They finished Regina off in the fourth on a 15-6 closing run.

Big fourth leads Treynor past West Burlington

After seeing its lead fall by the wayside, Treynor regrouped in the fourth.

The Cardinals punched their ticket to the 2A semifinals with a 73-63 victory over previously unbeaten West Burlington. They advance to face Western Christian back here on Thursday.

Down by three entering the final eight minutes of play, Treynor outscored West Burlington, 23-10. Alec Lovely led five players in double figures, scoring 22 points with Jace Tams adding 18 and Corbon Thien 12. Karson Elwood added 11 and Ethan Konz 10 with Tams recording nine rebounds.

For West Burlington, Mason Watkins finished with 22 points and Quincy Collins had 14. Kobe Davis added 12 points with seven rebounds.

Since the 2007-08 season, Treynor has recorded 10 seasons with at least 20 wins, including a 26-1 record in 2017-18 that saw them reach the state finals.
