Calvert Hall basketball coach Gary Neal resigns
TOWSON, MARYLAND – With a post on Facebook, Friday morning, former NBA basketball player Gary Neal announced his resignation as head basketball coach at Calvert Hall, where he once starred as a high school player.
Neal took over the Cardinals program prior to the 2021-22 season and went 45-59 in three seasons, including a 16-20 record this past season. His Cardinals especially struggled against the elite competition in the Baltimore Catholic League, going just 5-37 in three years in regular season play as well as 0-3 in the BCL Tournament.
Former NBA player Gary Neal has resigned after three seasons as the head basketball coach at Calvert Hall, his alma mater.
Neal began his high school career at Aberdeen High School where he played three seasons and led the Eagles to a 21-4 record and a MPSSAA Class B state championship in 2000. He then transferred to Calvert Hall for his senior year. He started his college career at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, but later transferred to Towson University, just a few miles from Calvert Hall's campus.
Neal began his professional basketball career in Europe, playing in Turkey, Spain and Italy before signing with the San Antonio Spurs in 2010. He spent six-plus seasons in the NBA, playing three years with the Spurs followed by stops in Milwaukee, Charlotte, Minnesota, Washington and Atlanta, before returning to Europe for two more seasons.
In 2019 he became a graduate assistant on the basketball staff at Towson, which is where he was when he has hired to lead the Calvert Hall program.
