Detroit King is the defending champ, and the Crusaders will be trying to pull off a difficult three-peat this season while every other team tries to stop them.

Before Detroit King began their special run in 2021, the previous two champions were DeWitt and River Rouge. Those two will once again be among the top two teams in the state and will look to dethrone Detroit King.

There will be a lot of special talent on display in the Division 3 football world this fall, so let’s take a look at some of the top contenders to win it all in 2023.

Detroit King

After winning the last two state championships, Detroit King is once again going to be a top contender. Head coach Tyrone Spencer has another very talented team, and it will once again be coming for it all.

However, winning three state championships in a row is no easy task. It will get every team's A game, and the road to the title will be filled with challenges. However, if there’s one team that’s up to the challenge, it’s Detroit King.

DeWitt

The last team to win the Division 3 state championship that wasn’t Detroit King was DeWitt in 2020. The freshmen that were involved in the program for that championship are now seniors.

It’s hard to get a taste of what it’s like to be on top as soon as your high school career begins and then lose that feeling. No one is going to be hungrier than those seniors. DeWitt will have a determined group this season, and a group that is poised for a run.

River Rouge

River Rouge has won a recent championship as they took home the state title in 2019. They were on the brink of another state championship in 2020 as they looked for two in a row, but fell short in the championship game against DeWitt.

This is going to be another determined group that wants to get back to the top.

Other contenders

Forest Hills Central

Walled Lake Western

Zeeland West

Mason

Mt. Pleasant

Lowell

Brother Rice

Prediction

I am picking River Rouge to win it all this season in Division 3. Detroit King will make another deep run, but three-peats are rare, and I think the streak ends at two. Hopefully we get to see River Rouge and Detroit King square off in the playoffs, because that would be a great game.
