Velma Jackson's versatile forward Devin Jones named Mr. Basketball for Class 2A

Jones nearly averaged a double-double with 20.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game

JACKSON — The MHSAA and the Mississippi Association of Coaches has announced Velma Jackson forward Devin Jones as the winner of the inaugural Mr. Basketball Award for Class 2A.

Jones, a 6-foot-5 senior power forward from Camden, Miss., has been instrumental for the Falcons (18-11), averaging 20.6 points, 9.5 rebounds 2.7 steals and 1.4 blocks a game.

With Jones at the helm, Velma Jackson beat North Forrest 56-28 in the first round of the MHSAA 2A Playoffs. They are set to host Bogue Chitto in the second round Saturday in Camden.

The Mr. Basketball Award is sponsored by C-Spire. The winners were voted on by a panel of media members and coaches from every corner of the state.

Jones will be honored before the 2A Boys Basketball Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum.

All 12 of the Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball winners will be recognized during the 2023 MHSAA State Championships at the Mississippi Coliseum (March 2-4). Recipients will also be honored at a special awards luncheon, which will also be live streamed on the NFHS Network, in the MHSAA Conference Center on March 7.
