Congratulations to Starkville girls basketball power forward Zariyah Edwards for being voted SBLive’s Mississippi High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 24-30!

The freshman scored 14 points to lead the Starkville girls basketball team to a 49-32 victory over Oxford in a 6A Region 1 matchup.

Edwards received 45.91% of the vote, beating out Starkville Academy's Reese Jackson who finished second with34%. Madison Central’s Lauren Baylor finished third with 13.06% and Hazlehurst Justin Adams-Johnson finished fourth with 10.96%. There were over 105,000 votes tallied this week!

Here are the other athletes who were nominated for Jan. 24-30:

Parker Henry, West Lauderdale Boys Basketball: The senior scored 22 points, 16 rebounds, and 6 blocks in loss against Choctaw Central. Henry had another impressive performance Friday night as he dropped a triple-double (14 points, 18 rebounds, 10 blocks) in a 48-37 win over Louisville.

Shaelynn Quick, Florence Girls Soccer: The Southern Mississippi signee scored two goals in a 5-0 second round 5A playoff win over West Harrison. Florence (20-1) will travel to George County for the MHSAA Class 5A South State Championship on Tuesday.

Reese Jackson, Starkville Academy Boys Basketball: The senior point guard has led Starkville Academy in scoring the last 3 games of the season with 18 points, 4 steals against Heritage Academy, and 13 points in a win over Washington Academy. Jackson ends the season with 103 steals total, and is the team’s leader in steals and assists.

D’Naylah Williams, Kosciusko Girls Basketball: Williams tallied 43 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals across two district wins against Louisville and Northeast Lauderdale. 

Luke Dickson, Oak Grove Boys Soccer: The senior scored a goal and added an assist in 3-1 6A playoffs win over Ocean Springs. Oak Grove (16-2) will travel to face Northwest Rankin on Tuesday in the South State championship.

Lauren Baylor, Madison Central Girls Soccer: Baylor stopped Oxford in penalty kicks by making two great saves to propel Madison Central to the North State Championship.

Miguel Magagnin, Northwest Rankin Boys Soccer: Magagnin scored a free kick in the 78th minute to send the top-ranked Cougars to the South State championship. 

Ethan LaBorde, Long Beach Boys Soccer: LaBorde score the go-ahead goal three minutes into the second 10-minute overtime period to lift Long Beach over Florence 2-1 in overtime in the second round of the 5A playoffs.

Ca’Lexis Campbell, Leake Central Boys Basketball: Scored a game-high 22 points to lead Leake Central past Choctaw Central 58-55 in overtime. With the win, the Gators secured the regular season district championship and the No. 1 seed in the Region 4-4A division tournament.

Audria Houston, Tupelo Girls Basketball: The junior scored 18 points in 58-25 win over Oxford. The Lady Wave now hold the 1st place in the division following the win. 

Madilynn Vuncannon, Walnut Girls Basketball: Recorded a double-double (32 points, 14 rebounds) in 64-54 win over Mantachie.

Josh Hubbard, Madison-Ridgeland Academy Boys Basketball: The junior guard joined the 3,000th career point club Saturday night with 38 points in overtime loss to Clinton Christian. Hubbard is now 145 points shy of the MAIS record with 3,024 career points. 

Miriam Prince, Leake Academy Girls Basketball: The junior point guard dropped 40 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals in 61-51 win against Simpson Academy.
