Ohio's top high school softball players: Meet the state’s best catchers

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a look at some of the top softball players in Ohio.

We started with the top first basemen, then second basemen, shortstops and third basemen, and now we move on to the catchers.

Note: Many high school softball players excel at multiple positions. Don't be alarmed to see a starting shortstop or ace pitcher listed here as a catcher, for example.

Summer Berry, Otsego, senior

A second-team all-Ohio selection last season, Berry hit .544 with 12 doubles and 26 RBIs. Along with the school record for doubles, she also set Otsego’s single-season record with 20 walks.

Katie Carrillo, Hudson, senior

A versatile player who can play shortstop and third base as well, Carrillo was a second-team all-district pick as a junior. She hit .371 with three home runs and 25 RBIs to earn first-team all-Suburban League National Conference honors.

Macy Chamberlin, Evergreen, sophomore

An honorable mention all-Ohio selection as a freshman, Chamberlin hit .690 last season, which ranked No. 21 in the history of OHSAA. She 13 home runs and struck out just three times.

Myrissa Combs, Ross, sophomore

She was a first-team all-conference selection as a freshman, as well as honorable mention all-Ohio. Combs is a solid player on offense and defense. She is a tough catcher who easily runs the game from behind the plate and led the team last year on offense by batting .534 with 17 doubles, 37 RBIs and 24 runs.

Kendall Forren, Lakota West, senior

She hit .500 with 12 doubles and 38 RBIs to earn all-GMC first-team honors last season, and she had a fielding percentage of .996. This season she's been even more dominant at the plate, hitting .650 with three home runs.

Emma Gilkerson, Strasburg, senior

The Cleveland State commit took home plenty of accolades last season, as she was first-team all-Ohio and first-team Eastern District, as well as the Eastern District Division IV player of the year. She hit .628 with 14 home runs, 48 RBIs and scored 49 runs. She is a power hitter who also hits for average. She is strong defensively, has a strong arm and has become quite the leader for Strasburg.

Kylie Gorsuch, Green, junior

She earned first-team all-Federal League honors last season by hitting.467 and a team-high five home runs and 26 RBIs. She has a cannon for an arm, and not much gets by her thanks to her strong blocking skills. She can also play third base.

Riley Hammonds, Russia, senior

A second-team all-Ohio selection last season, she hit .426 with 34 RBIs and 13 doubles. She is incredibly "softball smart" and knows the game inside and out. She leads the team on the field and even calls the pitches. She is furthering her softball career at Bluffton next year.

Teddi Hardoby, Wellington, senior

A first-team all-Ohio selection a year ago, Hardoby hit .500 with 34 RBIs as a junior. She got off to a strong start this season by hitting for the cycle in Wellington’s season opener.

Shea Harper, Hopewell-Loudon, junior

Harper was second-team all-Ohio last year, and she can play both catcher and first base. At each position, she has a strong defensive approach and is especially strong to her glove side. She hits the ball to all parts of the field.

Tatum Hubble, Westerville Central, junior

A versatile player who can catch or play the outfield, Hubble hit a team-high .557 last year. Her sophomore numbers led to an honorable mention all-Ohio nod, as well as first-team all-district and all-league honors.

Delaney Maynard, Eastwood, junior

She hit .523 as a junior, earning second-team all-Ohio honors in Division III. The 5-foot-5 backstop hit seven home runs and broke the school record with 11 triples, while driving in 39 runs.

Austy Miller, Bradford, senior

The first-team all-Ohio selection in Division IV hit .633 a year ago with 30 RBIs and 46 stolen bases. She is committed to play at Ohio University. She has also earned first-team all-conference honors in cross country and basketball.

Billie Miller, Bristol, senior

Miller hit .566 with 13 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 44 RBIs as a junior, garnering second-team all-Ohio honors. A great leader and hard worker, she understands the game within the game, which is one of the reasons she has so much success. She has been calling her own game as a catcher since the beginning of last season and is the commander of the field. She has been named co-captain of the team two years in a row as voted by her teammates.

Emma Ody, Avon, junior

She hit .486 with 20 RBIs as a sophomore, being named second-team all-Ohio in Division I and first-team all-conference. She has committed to the University of Toledo to play college softball.

Meghan Petitte, Garaway, senior

Petitte is a four-year starter at the varsity level. She has been voted one of the team captains every year since her sophomore year. Last season she earned honorable mention all-Ohio, as well as first-team East District and first-team all-conference. Petitte does a great job controlling the game from behind the plate and is a wall, as not much will make it by her. Last season, she hit .404 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.

Larren Rounds, Firelands, senior

A four-year team captain for Firelands, she was named all-Ohio honorable mention last season. She led the conference in home runs and holds the school's home run record. The University of Toledo commit was also first-team all-conference, first-team all-Lorain County and first-team all-Northeast Ohio as a junior. She can play multiple positions, including the corner infield spots.

Breanna Sexton, Vinton County, senior

Sexton is a four-year starter for Vinton County and has been named all-league and all-district each year. Last year she was named honorable mention all-Ohio as well, hitting .487 with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 38 RBIs.

Sydney Shaker, St. Vincent-St. Mary, sophomore

As a freshman, she hit .400 and had 10 stolen bases while playing the majority of her time at second base, the first time she had done so. She will be asked to catch more this year, which is her natural position. Offensively, she hits at the top of the Fighting Irish lineup.

Reagan Vunak, Lebanon, junior

Earned Division I second-team all-Ohio honors last season by hitting .588, which was good enough for fourth in the conference. She hit two home runs and had 35 RBIs.

Jordyn Wycuff, Watkins Memorial, sophomore

Watkins Memorial lost all-state catcher Madison Jellison to a torn ACL during basketball season, and Wycuff has stepped in admirably in her stead. She's hitting .594 with three homers and three triples for the nationally ranked Warriors.
