Small schools begin state tournament, larger schools involved in area tournament action

The Oklahoma high school basketball season has almost come to a close. Classes A and B are playing in the state tournament this week, and the other classes have area this week, with the state tournament next week.

Here are this week’s SBLive Oklahoma Top 25 boys basketball rankings.

Note: Rankings and records are through Feb. 27.

1. Tulsa Union (23-2); last week (1) 

Union remains red hot and is one win away from advancing to the state tournament. The Redhawks routed Muskogee in the regional semifinals and beat Bixby, 83-50, in the regional championship game. Union is now on a 16-game win streak and will play Choctaw Friday evening in the area championship game. Should Union lose, they still can advance to the state tournament with a win in the consolation game.

2. Owasso (22-3); last week (2)

The Rams are one win away from going back to the state tournament. They have a six-game winning streak since the loss to Tulsa Union. Owasso scored 98 points against Ponca City in the regional semifinals. In the regional finals, they faced a tough Jenks squad and won, 75-53. Owasso will square off against a feisty Edmond Memorial team Friday, but Owasso has beaten them twice in the regular season.

3. Edmond North (21-3); last week (3)

The defending Class 6A state champions were tested in the regional final against Mustang, but found a way to win, 68-60. The Huskies had to fight off Roman Miller, who joined the 1,000-point club in this game. Edmond North also routed Lawton Eisenhower in the regional semifinal. Edmond North will play Moore, who was the last team to beat the Huskies.

4. Dale (26-2); last week (4)

Dale rolled through its regionals last week when it defeated Elmore City-Pernell, 84-28, in the regional semifinals and beat Davis, 86-42. Oklahoma signee Dayton Forsythe played his final game in Dale last week on his birthday. Dale will play Hobart in Chickasha for the area championship.

5. OKC Douglass (15-4); last week (5)

Douglass defended well in the regional championship game. They beat Sequoyah (Claremore), 74-44. This was the second time the Eagles had been held to less than 50 points all season. The Trojans also beat Tecumseh, 93-51, in the regional semifinals. Douglass will play Anadarko Friday for the area championship game in Henryetta.

6. Choctaw (20-4); last week (6)

The Yellowjackets have played a tough schedule, but find ways to win. They routed U.S. Grant in the regional semifinals and held on to beat Sand Springs, 61-55, in the regional finals. Choctaw is one win away from advancing to the state tournament and faces Tulsa Union Friday.

7. Weatherford (25-1); last week (7)

The Eagles keep soaring high as they won both games in regionals by more than 25 points. Weatherford beat Mannford, 82-33, in the regional semifinals and beat Community Christian, 63-35, in the regional final. Weatherford will play Blanchard Friday evening at Hennessey in the area championship game. Weatherford has beaten Blanchard, 59-21, in the regular season.

8. Midwest City Carl Albert (21-4); last week (8)

Carl Albert dominated its regionals and are one win away from getting back to the state tournament. The Titans beat Noble, 98-42, in the regional semifinals and beat Elgin, 85-46. Carl Albert will play OKC Crossings Christian in the area championship game for a rubber match, with both teams already having defeated the other in the regular season.

9. OKC Crossings Christian (18-6); last week (9)

The Knights played in a tough regional, as they traveled to defending Class 5A champion Del City. In the regional semifinals, Crossings Christian beat OKC Southeast, 72-58. In the regional finals, they beat Del City by 10 points. Now, the Knights take on Midwest City Carl Albert Friday.

10. Edmond Deer Creek (20-5); last week (10)

The Antlers were challenged in the regional finals Friday against Norman North, but Edmond Deer Creek made plays down the stretch to get a 53-44 win. The night before in the regional semifinals, they beat Yukon by 25 points. The Antlers will play Norman in the area finals.

11. Midwest City (22-3); last week (11)

The Bombers are explosive on offense and have scored more than 100 points four times this season, including in the regional semifinals. They beat OKC Western Heights, 100-59, and held on to beat El Reno, 76-66, in the regional finals. Midwest City will play Guthrie in the area finals this Friday.

12. Tulsa Booker T. Washington (22-1); last week (12)

Booker T. Washington keeps winning and scored 102 in the regional semifinals against McAlester. They beat Claremore in the regional final, 90-53. The Hornets have no seniors on their starting five, which makes them young and dangerous. They will face Tulsa Edison Prep in the area finals.

13. Norman (20-4); last week (13)

The Tigers showed off their offense in the regional semifinals when they scored 110 points against OKC Capitol Hill. In the regional final, they beat Westmoore, 57-42. Norman has not lost since the Bishop McGuinness tournament. Norman will face Edmond Deer Creek in the area finals.

14. Moore (19-5); last week (14)

Moore has a 15-game winning streak and survived Lawton, 59-53, in overtime. In the regional semifinals, the Lions beat OKC Northwest Classen, 66-46. Moore will play defending Class 6A champion Edmond North in a rubber match. Moore’s last loss was to Edmond North, but the Lions beat the Huskies by 21 points a few weeks ago.

15. Edmond Memorial (17-7); last week (15)

The Bulldogs played in a tough regional, but made it out as regional champions. They beat Stillwater in the regional semifinals, but beat Class 6A runner up Broken Arrow, 51-47. They will play Owasso in the area finals.

16. Tulsa Holland Hall (19-3); last week (16)

The Dutch played well in regionals, which included a regional semifinal win over Pryor, 73-29, and a 69-28 win against Coweta. Holland Hall will play Collinsville in the area finals.

17. Guthrie (22-3); last week (20)

Guthrie has surprised people this season. In the regional semifinals, they survived Guymon, 59-51, but came out with a vengeance in the regional finals against Shawnee. Guthrie won that game, 87-38. Guthrie will play Midwest City in the area finals Friday. With a win Friday or in the area consolation, Guthrie will be in the state tournament for the first time since 2012.

18. Oklahoma Christian School (22-2); last week (21)

Oklahoma Christian School showed no weaknesses in its regional tournament. They defeated Lindsay, 56-30, in the regional semifinals. In the regional championship, the Saints pulled away from Kingston, 67-51. OCS will take on OKC Mount St. Mary’s Friday in the area finals.

19. Calumet (29-0); last week (22)

Calumet is back in the state tournament as they beat Kinta, 46-30. They have not lost a game all season and are three wins away from a state title. Their journey begins against Varnum on Wednesday in the Class B quarterfinals.

20. Collinsville (20-4); last week, unranked

Collinsville has what might be the best win in Class 5A. They knocked off Tulsa Memorial, 46-40, in the regional championship. This ends Memorial’s 12-year regional win streak. Collinsville will play Tulsa Holland Hall in the area finals.

21. Pocola (25-1); last week (24)

The Indians had no problems whatsoever in their regionals. They defeated Hulbert, 78-47, in the regional semifinals and beat Warner, 80-35, in the regional finals. The Indians will take on Howe in the area finals Friday.

22. Tulsa Victory Christian (21-4); last week (25)

Victory Christian put on a clinic in their regionals last week. They beat Blackwell, 70-32, in the regional semifinals, then beat Tulsa Lincoln Christian, 59-26, in the regional finals. The Conquerors will take on Tulsa Metro Christian in the area finals Friday.

23. Edison Prep (19-6); last week, unranked

Since the loss to Catoosa in the semifinals of the Port City Classic, Tulsa Edison Prep has rallied off 11 wins in a row. The Eagles beat Grove in the regional semifinals, then beat Bishop Kelley in the regional final. Tulsa Edison Prep takes on Booker T. Washington Friday in the area finals.

24. El Reno (19-7); last week (23)

Despite losing to Midwest City in the regional finals, the Indians are still a great basketball team. They will have to come through the area consolation to get to the state tournament and will play Santa Fe South, who they beat in the regional semifinals.

25. North Rock Creek (22-3); last week, unranked

North Rock Creek has flown under the radar all season, but looks to get back to the state tournament. They defeated Wagoner, 62-47, in the regional semifinals, then beat Stilwell, 63-49, in the regional final. North Rock Creek will take on Newcastle in the area finals.
