WAVOR 2022 all-star game: Future Wazzu basketball teammates shine as Washington girls run away from Oregon
HILLSBORO, Ore. — Mount Si senior Lauren Glazier had heard a lot about her future Washington State teammate Kyra Gardner, but to even her own surprise, they’d never shared the court before the 2022 WAVOR all-star game Sunday.
Her first impression?
“How high she can jump, and just float,” Glazier said, “it just amazes me.”
Sunday gave Glazier a lot to be excited for. Her and Gardner — who plan to room together in Pullman as freshmen — combined for 44 points as Team Washington beat Team Oregon 126-91 in the once-annual interstate senior high school all-star game, which was on a two-year hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Holding the MVP trophy from the event formerly known as the Northwest Shootout at Liberty High School, Glazier, who had nine rebounds and four assists to go along with her 20 points, said what surprised her perhaps even more was how cohesively the collection of Washington standouts played after only a couple days of preparation.
Of the 52 made baskets, there was an assist tied to 37 of them. That led to seven double-digit scorers. They key? Keeping things light in practice, Glazier said, and during their hotel stay in downtown Portland and activities lined up for both teams by event organizers Sport Oregon and the Maurice Lucas Foundation.
“Our team chemistry was insane for just knowing each other for two days,” Glazier said.
“Outside the court, we did so well together. At night, we hug out in the lobby and just goofed around. We just worked really well together. Practice was fun, not too serious but serious at times, and our personalities fit really well."
Two of them were Woodinville’s dynamic senior backcourt of Tatum Thompson (Boise State) and Veronica Sheffey (San Diego), who led the Falcons to their first Class 4A WIAA state championship in early March.
Those who trekked down from the state of Washington were able to hear “Thompson to Sheffey” — or vice versa — over the public address for one last time on the high school stage.
And neither soon-to-be Division I guard disappointed.
Thompson scored 17 points on 8 of 12 shooting and added five rebounds and three assists. Sheffey led the game with nine assists, and had 12 points of her own.
Gardner, who will graduate as Raymond’s all-time program scoring leader, dropped a game-high 24 points and hit 9 of 14 shooting, 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
"I'm so excited to play with her in the future," Glazier said, "and even room with her."
The girls hit 11 of their first 13 shots and finished shooting 50.5 percent from the field in the game. Team Washington has won 11 of the last 13 times and pushes its all-time series lead to 17-9 over Team Oregon.
