Celedon crushed a 2-1 pitch over the right-field fence to give the Lady Bobcats the victory

LAREDO, Texas - Edinburg’s Shelby Celedon ripped a grand slam over the right-field fence with one out in extra innings to lift the Lady Bobcats to a 9-5 victory over Laredo Nixon in their final game of the 2022 Border Olympics on Saturday.

“It has been a tough couple of games for us. We started off really good, but we lost two games we should have not lost against Carrizo Springs and against Del Rio,” Edinburg head coach Ramon Arciba Jr. said. “We needed to come back and finish with a game that would send our girls back home with some confidence before we continue district play on Tuesday.”

Edinburg will battle Mission on Tuesday as they resume district play in the Rio Grande Valley. The Lady Bobcats are 2-0 in District 31-6A.

Edinburg’s Alina Garza and Laredo Nixon’s Gulia Garza engaged in a pitching duel through most of Saturday's game. The Lady Mustangs led 4-3 heading into the final inning, but Edinburg tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half. They had runners on first and third base and threatened to win it, but Laredo Nixon was able to get out of the inning.

In extra innings, both teams started with runners placed at second and third base. Laredo Nixon's Rossana Salas scored in the top half to give the Lady Mustangs a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom half, Edinburg’s Donna Quintero scored on an error by Laredo Nixon to tie up the game at 5-5. Then Celedon strolled to the plate with one out and the bases loaded and crushed a 2-1 pitch over the fence to give the Lady Bobcats the victory.

Krysto De La Rosa scored two runs for Laredo Nixon and Stephanie Villalobos blasted a home run in third inning.

Despite the loss Laredo Nixon is feeling confident heading into their district opener on Tuesday against Laredo Alexander.

“The Border Olympics is a tune up for our district opener on Tuesday,” Laredo Nixon head coach Frank Quiroz said. “I feel that our girls played really well in all six games and we will be ready for Tuesday.”
