Photos: Paul Jaramillo, Luke Martinez lead San Antonio Southside to 3-2 win over Laredo Nixon
LAREDO, Texas - Paul Jaramillo scored three runs to help San Antonio Southside beat Laredo Nixon 3-2 at the LISD Hardball Classic Saturday afternoon.
Luke Martinez picked up the win on mound and was relieved by Jacob Garcia. Martinez had five strikeouts and gave up four hits, while Garcia closed out the game with two strikeouts.
“We started out a little slow, but we picked it up there at the end. We started putting the ball in play, we stayed aggressive on the base path, and we executed the bunt well,” San Antonio Southside head coach Blake Vincent said.
“Luke pitched a heck of a game; he threw strikes all game,” Vincent said. “Jacob came in a closed it out at the end for us and it was a big win.”
San Antonio Southside outhit Laredo Nixon 6-4 with Jaramillo, Leo Sanchez and Sonny Santos leading the way. Aiden Garcia and Eddie Villazana also picked up hits for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals struck first in the second inning on an RBI single Sanchez that scored Jaramillo.
San Antonio Southside added another run in the fourth inning with the same scenario. Jaramillo ripped his second single of the game and eventually came around to score on another RBI single by Sanchez.
Laredo Nixon rallied back in their half of the fourth inning an RBI single by Joey Gamez that plated Ricky Rodriguez to make it a 2-1 game.
In the fifth inning Southside capitalized on three errors by the Laredo Nixon defense to take a 3-1 lead.
After Martinez hit two Laredo Nixon batters in a row to open the sixth inning, Jail Hernandez belted an RBI single to score PG Garza to cut the lead to 3-2.
After Martinez issued a walk to Jose Escamilla to start the seventh inning, Garcia came on in relief and recorded the final three outs to secure the victory.
