Meet the finalists for SBLive's 2022-23 Texas Class 2A girls basketball Player of the Year

After four months of regular season play and seven rounds of postseason, it's time to recognize the top stars in the 2022-23 Texas high school basketball season.

SBLive has selected finalists for our Class 1A-6A and Private School Player of the Year awards to be chosen by the fans.

First we took a look at the private school (TAPPS) boys and girls finalists, then Class 6A boys, Class 5A boys, Class 4A boys and Class 3A boys.

On the girls side, we started with Class 6A, then moved down to 5A, 4A and 3A. Next up? Here are the five finalists for the Class 2A Texas girls basketball player of the year:

2A state player of the year: Meet the finalists

Brenna Butler, Gruver Sr. SG/SF

Helped the Greyhounds reach the state finals and a runner-up finish, a year after the 5-foot-6 guard won a title. The Oklahoma State pledge averaged more than 15 points per game, while having just under 3 assists per game. Butler was the District 1-2A MVP this year.

Aizlyn Dewberry, Wink Soph. F

She averaged a double-double for the Wildcats, scoring 16.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Had a career-best 50 in a 84-19 win over Anthony on Feb. 7. She hit 48% of her shots from the field.

Ciarrah Golden, Hearne Sr. PG/SG

The senior guided her school to the final four for the first time in school history and 33 wins. She scored 15.4 points, dished out 4 assists and had 3.9 steals per game for the Eagles. Scored her 1,000th point in January. 

Alessandra Jimenez, Fort Hancock Jr. PG

She was not only the Mustangs’ top scorer (20.6 points per game) she was also the top rebounder (10.7), passer (5.7 assists) and turnover creator (5.7 steals) per contest. Scored at 10 points in all 29 games. She was the District 6-2A MVP.

Gabby Mata, Charlotte Jr. PF/C

The 5-foot-11 post averaged more rebounds (17.3) per game than points (16.0) for the Trojans. Also had six blocks per game and shot 55% percent from the field.

Shawna Robinson, Marlin Jr. PG/SG

Scored a season-high 33 points in January in a win against Wortham. Finished the season with a team-high 16.6 points per game average and led the Bulldogs with 4.4 steals per game as well. Robinson was named the District 18-2A MVP.
