MLB Draft 2023: Blake Mitchell selected 8th overall by Kansas City Royals

Sinton High School (Texas) catcher was SBLive's 2023 Texas State Player of the Year as a senior

Sinton High School (Texas) catcher and two-time Texas Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year Blake Mitchell was taken No. 8 overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2023 MLB Draft on Sunday.

Mitchell is signed with LSU, and was projected in the middle first round heading into the draft, which is taking place in Seattle.

MLB.com projected Mitchell at No. 14 to the Boston Red Sox at a pick worth $4,663,100, but he went much sooner — for a pick worth $5,980,100.

Mitchell led nationally ranked Sinton to a UIL Class 4A state championship in 2022 as a junior, then back to state in 2023. The Pirates lost to eventual Class 4A state champion China Spring in the 4A semis in June in a state tournament record-long 12 innings.

The SBLive Texas State Player of the Year hit .452 on the season with 41 RBI and six home runs with a 1.000 fielding percentage and built a reputation as a nightmare to steal on.

He was the third high school prospect taken in the draft after Franklin Community (Indiana) outfielder Max Clark (No. 3) and South Brunswick (North Carolina) outfielder Walker Jenkins (No. 5).
