TUMWATER - The Tumwater Thunderbirds came into this season thinking they were legitimate Class 2A championship contenders.

But after Thursday night, they might have a case for being one of the top programs in the state, regardless of classification.

From start to finish, the Thunderbirds were in control of reigning Class 4A runner-up Woodinville, and posted a lopsided 78-55 non-league victory over the Falcons.

The loss snapped Woodinville's 33-game regular-season winning streak, dating back to January of 2019. And it was the 4A KingCo champions' worst loss in 14 seasons.

"We knew we were playing a good team," Woodinville girls coach Scott Bullock said. "But we did not play well."

It was the Falcons' first game without all-state forward Mia Hughes, who is now playing at Montana State University.

And they appeared a step behind - getting out to Tumwater shooters, especially Aubrey Amandala, who scored half of her 22 points in the first quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers.

After Tatum Thompson picked up her fourth foul for Woodinville in the third quarter, the Thunderbirds stretched a six-point lead to 60-42 on Kyle Waltermeyer's steal and layup with 6:28 to go.

Tumwater coach Robin Johnson said since the matchup was made, her team had spent a great amount of time preparing to play the Falcons.

"We figured if we can compete with a quality team like they are, then we can compete with anybody," Johnson said.

Natalie Sumrok led all scorers for the Thunderbirds with 26 points, 16 coming in the second half.
