Photos: Top-ranked Garfield locks down Seattle Prep late to win Metro League basketball championship
SEATTLE —Sherrell McCullum had 19 points, Jaylin Stewart added 16 and top-ranked Garfield rode a fourth quarter comeback to beat Seattle Prep 67-60 on Friday night at Seattle Pacific University.
The Bulldogs (17-0) trailed by eight after three quarters, before opening the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run capped by a steal and two-handed fast break slam by Stewart, who also hit the go-ahead 3 with just over four minutes left and threw down a dunk to seal it with 12.6 seconds left.
Washington commit Koren Johnson was limited to seven points — all in the first half — and fouled out late in the third.
The Panthers (15-5) were paced by Braeden Smith's 21 points, 20 from Tyler Mrus and 14 more from Christian King.
Both teams advance to a Tuesday game in the District 2 Tournament. Garfield plays the winner of Eastside Catholic and Hazen; Prep plays the winner of O'Dea and Bellevue.
