National top 25 high school wrestling rankings for every weight class (2/9/2024)

Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and New Jersey holding state dual meet finals this weekend, while Ohio has an unofficial event; sectional, regional and state finals set for many other states

Most states around the country are in some form of the postseason. There are a few exceptions, but there are not many. Ohio’s individual state tournament is the last one in the nation in March but this weekend they are having an unofficial dual meet state tournament hosted by the OHSWCA. Since it’s unofficial, some teams, even standouts such as Perrysburg, are passing on this endeavor.

Some of the official state dual meet tournaments happening this weekend are in Maryland, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. New Jersey’s concludes on Sunday, with the others finishing on Saturday.

Montana and Utah are holding their individual state tournaments. Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa are amongst states that are one step away from their state championships with Sectionals in Illinois, Semi-States in Indiana, and Districts in Iowa.

Regionals are taking place in Colorado, Tennessee, and Virginia, with their state tournaments the following weekend.

Georgia and Wisconsin have sectionals this weekend and states next.

Michigan and New York hold their state tournaments on February 23rd and 24th. Both start their process this week with Michigan holding Districts, then Regions before states. New York has Sectionals then a break for a week before the state tournament.

California is kicking off their series of postseason events starting with Divisional competition.

Lake Highland Prep has its National Prep Tournament qualifier next weekend. The Florida powerhouse is hosting Arizona’s Valiant Prep for a dual meet on Saturday morning. Valiant Prep is not part of their state’s Athletic Association, which keeps them from competing against most schools during the high school season. This will be just their second event since the season began following January’s RWC Duals in Richmond, Virginia.

On the rankings front, there were some subtle changes. Expect chaos to return as the more competitive states come down to the wire and the top dogs begin meeting on the state level. Consider this the calm before the storm for states like California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

We do have a new No. 1 at 138, but not because of any recent result on the mat. It occurred because of a weight cut by Gilroy’s Daniel Zepeda, who returned to 138-pounds after beginning the season at 150 and making a brief stop at 144. Zepeda was rolling in his match with Bo Bassett (Bishop McCort, Pennsylvania) at FloWrestling’s Who’s No. 1 before pinning Bassett. Bassett was No. 1 until Zepeda made the cut down.
