Photos, video: Graford beats defending state champ Texline in Texas (UIL) 1A boys basketball championship
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Marc Matthews and Teagan Ford combined for 29 points to lead Graford to a 42-39 victory over Texline in the Texas (UIL) Class 1A boys basketball state championship on Saturday morning.
It's the first state title in school history for Graford (37-3).
Ford (15 points) and Matthews (14 points) provided most of the offense for the Jackrabbits. Matthews had 4 steals, including the game-clinching steal with less than five seconds to play which prevented Texline from getting off a potential game-tying 3-pointer. (Watch Matthews' clutch steal in the highlight video above.) Matthews was voted the MVP of the game.
Texline led 36-31 early in the fourth quarter, but Graford rallied to tie it at 36-36 on a layup by Ford with just over five minutes to play. Texline's Noel Lozano buried a 3-pointer with 4:06 to play to give the Tornadoes a 39-36 lead, but that would be their final points of the game.
Graford scored the final six points of the game, including two clutch free throws from Connor Waters with six seconds to play.
Will Luther led Texline with 25 points and 6 rebounds.
